Willard began appreciating the relationship between nature and humans when he was a kid in Ottertail County, Minnesota. His grandfather introduced him to the ways of the wilderness in the Mule Lake area. A portion of the lands surrounding the lake have been protected with conservation easements held in favor of the Minnesota Land Trust.
